कोणत्याही कृतीत हेतु शुद्ध पाहिजे.
 Every action must have a pure intention.

तमोगुण हा तिन्ही गुणांत जास्त जड असल्याकारणाने त्याचा परिणाम या जगामध्ये लगेच दिसून येतो.
Tamoguna, being the heaviest of the three gunas, shows its effects most quickly in this world.

दुष्ट बुद्धी हा तमोगुणाचा परिणाम आहे.
Evil intellect is a result of tamoguna.

परंतु भगवंताच्या नामाने बुद्धी स्वच्छ करण्याची सोय माणसाच्या ठिकाणी आहे.
However, man has the means to purify the intellect through God’s name.

यासाठी पुष्कळ नामस्मरण करावे, म्हणजे सत्त्वगुणाचा उदय होतो आणि बुद्धी शुद्ध बनते.
One should do much chanting of God's name, which leads to the rise of sattva guna and purifies the intellect.

देहाला कष्ट दिले म्हणजे भगवंत वश होतो हे काही खरे नाही.
It is not true that afflicting the body wins over God.

तसे जर असते तर रस्त्यात उन्हामध्ये खडी फोडणार्‍यांना भगवंत लवकर वश झाला असता !
If that were true, then those breaking stones under the sun on the road would have won over God easily!

भगवंताचे लक्ष आपल्या देहापेक्षा मनाकडे असते.
God looks more at the mind than at the body.

आपल्या मनामध्ये प्रापंचिक हेतू ठेवून भगवंताच्या नावाने उपवासासारखे कष्ट केले तरी, ते पाहून लोक फसतील, पण भगवंत फसणार नाही.
If we fast or endure hardship using God’s name but with worldly intentions, people may be deceived, but God won’t be.

आपण जसे बोलतो तसे वागण्याचा अभ्यास करावा.
We should practice living the way we speak.

परमार्थामध्ये ढोंग फार बाधक असते.
Hypocrisy is a great obstacle in spirituality.

प्रापंचिक गोष्टीकरता उपवास करणे मला पसंत नाही.
I do not approve of fasting for worldly reasons.

उपवास घडावा यात जी मौज आहे ती उपवास 'करावा' यामध्ये नाही.
There is true joy when fasting happens naturally, not when forced.

भगवंताच्या स्मरणामध्ये इतके तल्लीन व्हावे की आपण नेहमी त्याजवळ वास करतो आहोत असे मनाला वाटावे.
One should be so immersed in God’s remembrance that the mind feels like it always dwells near Him.

मग देहाने अन्न खाल्ले म्हणून बिघडले कुठे ?
Then, what’s wrong if the body eats food?

या‍उलट, आपल्या चित्तांत भगवंताचे नाम नसतांना आपण देहाने पुष्कळ उपवास केले, तरी अशक्तपणा शिवाय दुसरे काही पदरात पडणार नाही.
On the other hand, if there is no remembrance of God in the heart, even many fasts will only result in weakness.

काही लोक वेडे असतात; त्यांना आपण उपासतापास कशासाठी करतो आहोत हेच समजत नाही.
Some people are foolish; they don’t even understand why they are fasting.

कोणत्याही कृतीला वास्तविक मोल तुमच्या हेतूवरून येते.
The true value of any action lies in your intention.

हेतू शुद्ध असून एखादे वेळी कृती बरी नसली तरी भगवंताच्या घरी चालते;
If the intention is pure, even a flawed action is accepted by God.

पण हेतू चांगला नसून कृती मात्र फार चांगली असली तरी भगवंत त्यापासून दूरच राहतो.
But if the intention is impure, even the best action cannot bring God closer.

माणसाने केलेला उपवास निष्काम असून, तो केवळ भगवंताच्या स्मरणात राहावे म्हणून केलेला असला तर फारच उत्तम आहे.
A man’s fast is best when it is selfless and done only to remain in remembrance of God.

निष्काम कर्माचे फार फार महत्त्व आहे.
Selfless action holds immense value.

'भगवंतासाठी भगवंत हवा' अशी आपली वृत्ती असावी.
One’s attitude should be: "For God, I want only God."

किंबहुना, नाम घेत असताना, प्रत्यक्ष भगवंत समोर ठाकला, आणि 'तुला काय पाहिजे ?' असे त्याने विचारले,
In fact, while chanting His name, if God appears before you and asks, "What do you want?"

तर 'तुझे नामच मला दे' हे त्याच्याजवळ मागणे, याचे नाव निष्कामता होय.
Then asking only for His name is true selflessness.

कारण, रूपाने व्यक्त झालेला भगवंत केव्हातरी नाहीसा होईल, पण त्याचे नाम मात्र अखंड टिकेल;
Because God’s form may disappear one day, but His name will remain forever.

आणि त्याचे नाम घेतले की त्याला आपल्याकडे येणे जरूर आहे.
And if you chant His name, He is bound to come to you.

म्हणून, देहाला कष्ट देण्याच्या भानगडीत न पडता भगवंतासाठीच नाम घेत असावे.
Therefore, instead of tormenting the body, one should simply chant God’s name for His sake.

त्याची कृपा झाल्याशिवाय राहणार नाही.
His grace will surely come.

श्लोक:
"जेथे नाम तेथे राम हा ठेवावा विश्वास । कृपा करील रघुनाथ खास ॥"
Translation:
"Where there is God’s name, there is Rama — keep this firm faith. Lord Raghunath will surely bestow His grace."

मराठीत (Marathi):

या प्रवचनात महाराजांनी "कृतीपेक्षा हेतू महत्त्वाचा" हे अधोरेखित केले आहे. तमोगुणामुळे दुष्ट बुद्धी निर्माण होते, पण भगवंताच्या नामस्मरणाने सत्त्वगुण वाढतो आणि बुद्धी शुद्ध होते. शरीराला कष्ट देऊन भगवंत वश होतो असे नाही; भगवंत मनाकडे बघतो. कृती निष्काम व भगवंतासाठीच असावी. ढोंग, दिखावा, किंवा प्रापंचिक हेतूने उपवास केला तरी तो भगवंताकडे पोहोचत नाही. उपवास स्वतःहून होऊ द्यावा, केवळ भगवंताच्या स्मरणात तल्लीन होण्यासाठी. भगवंत जर समोर आला व "काय हवे?" विचारले, तर "तुझे नामच हवे" अशी वृत्ती असावी. नामामध्येच भगवंत असतो, आणि नाम अखंड राहते. म्हणून देहकष्ट न करता भगवंतासाठी नामस्मरण करावे. त्याची कृपा निश्चित मिळते.

In this discourse, Maharaj emphasizes that the purity of intention is more important than the action itself. Tamoguna leads to evil thoughts, but chanting God’s name increases sattva guna and purifies the intellect. Afflicting the body does not please God—He looks at the mind. Actions must be selfless and done only for God. Fasting or rituals done with worldly motives may fool people but not God. Fasting should arise naturally from deep immersion in God’s remembrance. If God appeared and asked, "What do you want?" the ideal answer should be: "Only Your name." God’s form may fade, but His name is eternal. Therefore, one should chant God’s name with pure devotion, not bodily hardship. His grace is certain to follow.
